INTRODUCING

A pioneering course designed for educators, counselors, and school administrators committed to the holistic development of students with interrupted/inconsistent formal education and English Language Learners (SIFE/ELLs). This resource recognizes SIFE/ELL students' intricate challenges and unique experiences and introduces mindfulness as a foundational pillar to support their academic, emotional, and social growth

"Mindful Journeys" is a transformative course designed for educators to enhance their approach to (SIFE/ELLs) through mindfulness practices. This course aims to deepen teacher-student relationships, facilitate positive student interactions, create an inclusive and positive learning environment, and ensure every student feels respected, valued, and trusted. By integrating mindfulness into the classroom, educators learn to cultivate empathy, reduce stress, and promote well-being, thereby establishing a supportive and nurturing educational space. Through practical mindfulness exercises, "Mindful Journeys" equips teachers with the skills to foster a sense of community and belonging, ensuring that SIFE/ELL students can excel academically, socially, and emotionally. This course underscores the power of mindfulness in breaking down barriers to inclusivity and building a classroom atmosphere where every student, regardless of their background, feels complete and embraced.

Our course meticulously integrates mindfulness to tackle educators' multifaceted challenges when teaching Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE/ELLs) by offering a suite of best practices, strategies, and resources for effective teaching engagements. Mindfulness practices are central to this approach, enhancing teachers' emotional resilience, focus, and stress management, creating a nurturing learning environment conducive to SIFE/ELL students' academic and emotional development. By fostering a mindful classroom atmosphere, educators can improve their responsiveness to SIFE/ELL students' needs, strengthen teacher-student relationships, and encourage students' self-regulation and stress management skills. This addresses the immediate training and resource gaps identified by educators and builds their confidence and efficacy in handling the complexities of SIFE/ELL education, ultimately aiming to uplift educational outcomes for SIFE/ELL students through a supportive, inclusive, and effective teaching approach.

The World-class Instructional Design and Assessment

"WIDA" (a consortium of 40 states whose education departments have joined together to develop English proficiency standards and assessments) about SIFE/ELLs: "Students with this background often need their emotional, psychological, and physiological needs to be met before they are able to engage fully in the educational setting." Once these needs are met, schools must help students build literacy skills in their home language and English, fill in the gaps in content knowledge, and support their social and emotional needs (For more on WIDA, visit https://wida.wisc.edu.

For more on building ELLs’ literacy skills, see “Educating English Language Learners” in the Fall 2018 issue of American Educator, available at www.aft.org/ae/ fall2018/august. )

Integrating mindfulness principles into educational support for SIFE/ELLS students offers a comprehensive pathway to addressing their complex needs. This guide combines evidence-based research with practical applications of mindfulness, aiming to create an empathetic, supportive, and resilient learning environment for SIFE/ELLS students.
